Birthday Weekend

On Saturday Mogs, Carrie and I went to our Democratic precinct caucus. As most of you know by now, Barack Obama swept the February 9th caucuses and primary. Washingtonians supported Obama two to one over Hillary Clinton! Our caucus was crowded, hot, drawn-out and confusing, but when all was said and done I was proud to have been there.

At breakfast that morning, we asked Mogs whether she was going to caucus for Hillary or Obama. She said “Bama.” When we got home we asked what part of the caucus she liked best, and she said “meat.” So above you see Carrie giving Mogs a piece of bologna before sending her up for her nap, two hours overdue.

Today is our little girl’s second birthday. We had nutmeg and cottage cheese pancakes for breakfast, and then drove to a coworker’s house to visit with her animals. We saw horses, kittens, dogs, and cockatiels. Mogs was a little timid with all of the animals, but I could tell from her face that she was on cloud nine. My sweet coworker gave Mogs a little homemade paperboard stable to take with her, and three little plastic horses to match the horses we’d just met. We’ll be hearing about that visit for some time.

For lunch we ate at Mogs’ favorite bakery, and then home for her nap.

A full and wonderful weekend — I hope yours was the same.

UPDATE:  With three-quarters of precincts reporting, the New York Times says that Obama has an 18% lead over Clinton in today’s Maine caucus — hooray!
