The Rock I’ve Been Under

So it’s been forever since I’ve posted, and my loyal readers know why — I’ve been hard at work on my story for the city’s public art program. To my credit I can say that I have not been tempted to noodle with this here w’blog for the past month.

I’m writing for a couple of hours every day, on my lunch hour and for as much time as Mogs will let me squeeze in during the evening. I’m really pushing it, to the point where I have to force myself to quit around midnight every night. I’m not getting much sleep.

(Full disclosure: my urge to noodle may have been sated by the NEW LAPTOP I bought myself! It was moderately priced and it’s running Vista and I’m cruising on the wi-fi clouds as we speak. I’m crazy about it.)

The story I’m working on is exciting, and at this point, far too long. When I’m done it will likely be closer to a novel, or at least a novella, than to a short story.  In any case, I have about six weeks before I need to be done with a workable draft. The point of no return. Both Carrie and I are busy making art; it feels like a very vital existence. I hope we can keep this up, and that Mogs will grow up taking it for granted that art was made in her home.

I may not post again for a while. The Democratic horse race is driving me crazy, absolutely killing me, but other than that I’m pretty focused on my writing. Wish me luck.

I’ll leave you with a few of Mogs’ own thoughts on art:

How is Windows Vista? I have been contemplating on whether to upgrade to Vista from XP. I heard that it has a lot of compatibility issues.

In general, who would you say talks about “poking” the most in your house? In our house, it’s a tossup between Astrid and me. Every day I threaten to “poke her in the gizmo,” but she has to guess what part of her body is that day’s gizmo (has to be a soft, tickly part, but NOT HER UNDERARMS!). Then I get a lot of pokes on my shoulders (the world’s tiniest backrubs, I like to think of these pokes) and, if I’m unlucky, pokes on my head and way too close to my glasses.

Anyway, I enjoyed hearing Imogen say the word “poke” so many times. I felt right at home.

“I am not a crook.”
She sounds just like Richard Nixon (but cuter…much cuter.)
