A Week in the Islands

Tonight we got back from five nights on Lopez Island.  No internet, almost no news, but lots of beach time and bunnies and deer and crabs and majestic passenger ferries going by our window oh, twenty or thirty times each day.  It was pretty blissful, a real family vacation.  I got a lot of work done on my story, not that I’m anywhere near finished with the thing.  But it felt great to have the leisure to pick up my laptop and write a few times each day, and to really focus.  Carrie also did a lot of drawing — would that we could live that kind of life all the time.

Take a look at these pictures, and tell me if you can identify Mogs’ favorite way of posing for the camera.

Oh how I envy your San Juan Islands trip! My mother lives on Fidalgo, and it’s really just the perfect place for a summer trip, yet here I am stuck in Manhattan in the middle of the first heatwave of the summer instead. I’m glad someone, at least, got to frolic by the sea!

Thanks for the visit, Emma. If it’s any consolation, there are plenty of times I’d like to trade western WA in for NYC. I even like the sultry summers there — I used to live in New Jersey, and I remember them well.

There’s nothing like wildflowers by a country road in front of a barbed wire fence.
